If you’ve never had massage therapy done before, then you probably have a lot of questions. The following massage therapy FAQ should help inform you about what massage therapy is and how it can help you:

The first thing you’ll do is go over your health and medical history with your massage therapist. You may be asked to fill out a form that asks basic questions about your health history. The massage therapist will then ask what physical issues you’re looking to address using massage therapy. They will perform an assessment in order to evaluate your condition and to determine if massage therapy is appropriate. During this part of the appointment, you should be sure to let the therapist know about any medications you’re on, any allergies that you have, or any health concerns you have. A good massage therapist can adapt the session to meet your needs.

For full-body massages, patients typically get completely undressed. However, you can leave your underwear on if that makes you more comfortable. You can also undress as little as you want based on your comfort levels; however, a massage therapist will have a more difficult time providing you with the benefits of massage therapy the more clothes you leave on since they will have to work around them. You will be given privacy to undress and get on the table before the session begins.

Most massage therapists will drape a sheet or towel over you, only leaving the part of your body that’s being worked on uncovered. This should allow you to feel much more comfortable while on the table.

The average massage therapy session lasts an hour. If you’re going in for a partial massage session (such as to have your neck or shoulders worked on), then it may only require a half-hour session. However, most people prefer the hour or hour-and-a-half-long sessions so that they can have their entire body worked on.

You should feel very relaxed after a massage. You may also feel relief from long-term aches and pains. A lot of people will also feel an increase in energy and awareness that can last for days. If you had a deep massage done, then you may feel a little sore the following day. You’ll want to make sure you drink plenty of water after your session ends.
