Knee pain can be very debilitating in that it can restrict your normal function, making it difficult to simply move around. Fortunately, physical therapy in Vero Beach, FL can be very helpful in not only improving your overall mobility, but also in reducing your knee pain.
Types of Knee Pain
Before a physical therapist can begin providing treatment, they will need to diagnose the type of knee pain you are having. There are three main types: acute pain, sub-acute pain and chronic knee pain. Acute pain is the most severe and tends to occur within a week of an injury to the knee. You’ll need some time for your injury to begin healing before beginning physical therapy. Sub-acute pain occurs between two and six weeks of the injury, during which you can begin working to regain mobility. Chronic knee pain lasts for more than eight to 12 weeks and will need to be evaluated by your healthcare provider.
Knee Pain Symptoms
The following are the different areas of the knee where you might be feeling pain and how that can affect your mobility:
- Front of the knee – Pain in the front of the knee is often caused by a condition known as PFSS (patellofemoral stress syndrome), which can cause inflammation and pain in the tendons and shin.
- Back of the knee – Back of the knee pain is rare. Usually, it’s a side effect of a hamstring strain. In some cases, the pain could be the result of a Baker’s cyst, which develops when the knee joint swells.
- Inside of the knee – Injuries to the medial collateral ligament or the medial meniscus will cause pain on the inside area of the knee. Such injuries often occur when the body twists over the knee while the foot remains planted.
- Outside of the knee – Pain in the outside of the knee can be the result of a number of injuries, including hamstring injuries, ligament damage or ITB (iliotibial band) stress, which occurs when the ITB, which is a thick band of tissue, rubs the knee causing a burning sensation.
