Physical Therapy After Surgery or a Medical Procedure

Much of our physical therapy practice involves helping patients follow through with rehabilitation prescribed by their physician or surgeon.

After an orthopedic procedure, recovery usually happens one step at a time. Physical therapy can help you safely rebuild strength, restore range of motion, and improve the movements you need in everyday life.

We follow your physician’s recommendations and any precautions associated with your procedure, while adapting your rehabilitation to your progress.

Your goal may be walking comfortably again, returning to work, getting back on the golf course, or simply being able to handle everyday activities without assistance. That’s what we’re working toward.

Getting You Back to What You Enjoy

Not everyone comes to physical therapy after surgery.

A shoulder problem may be interfering with your golf or tennis game. Knee pain might have taken you off the pickleball court. An injury may be keeping a younger athlete from competing. Or perhaps you’ve noticed that walking, balance, or ordinary daily activities aren’t as easy as they used to be.

Physical therapy at Florida Spine Chiropractic may help with:

  • Recovery after surgery or orthopedic procedures
  • Sports and activity-related injuries
  • Back and neck problems
  • Shoulder, hip, and knee problems
  • Strength and mobility
  • Balance and coordination
  • Auto accident injuries

For many of our patients, especially active older adults, the goal isn’t just reducing discomfort. It’s staying active, capable, and independent.

Physical Therapy Built Around You

Your first visit starts with a conversation.

Lisa wants to know what’s bothering you and, just as importantly, what’s keeping you from doing. She’ll evaluate strength, flexibility, mobility, balance, and movement issues related to your condition and develop a treatment plan based on her findings.

Treatment may include therapeutic exercise, hands-on manual therapy, stretching and mobility work, balance training, neuromuscular re-education, dry needling, and other physical therapy treatments and procedures.

As you improve, your program changes with you.

What to Expect at Physical Therapy

If you’ve never been to physical therapy, there’s no reason to be nervous about your first appointment.

We’ll talk about your symptoms, medical history, previous injuries or procedures, and what you’d like to accomplish. Lisa will evaluate the movements and physical limitations related to your problem, explain what she finds, and discuss a treatment plan with you.

We’ve also put together a more detailed guide to what to expect from physical therapy.

Physical Therapy at Florida Spine Chiropractic

Florida Spine Chiropractic is a small, family-led Vero Beach practice. Dr. Bryan Wells, DC, leads the chiropractic practice, while his sister, Dr. Lisa Weiss, DPT, leads physical therapy.

Chiropractic and physical therapy are separate services. You don’t have to be a chiropractic patient to receive physical therapy here.

Both services share the same practice atmosphere. We take providing knowledgeable, professional care seriously, but we also want you to feel comfortable here. We get to know our patients, listen to what matters to them, and encourage you to ask questions about your care.

Let’s Get You Moving Again

Recovery means different things to different people.

It might mean completing the rehabilitation your surgeon prescribed. It might mean getting back to normal activities. Maybe it’s returning to a sport after an injury, taking your morning walk again, or simply feeling stronger and more confident as you move through your day.

Whatever you’re working toward, we’d like to help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor’s referral for physical therapy in Florida?

In many situations, Florida allows patients to see a physical therapist without a physician’s referral. However, your insurance plan may require a referral or authorization to cover it. If you’re unsure, contact our office, and we can help you determine what’s required.

Do you provide physical therapy after surgery?

Yes. We work with patients recovering from orthopedic surgery and other medical procedures. Your physical therapist will follow your physician’s or surgeon’s recommendations and precautions and adjust your rehabilitation as you progress.

Do I have to be a chiropractic patient to receive physical therapy?

No. Chiropractic and physical therapy are separate services at Florida Spine Chiropractic. You can receive physical therapy without receiving chiropractic care.

What conditions do you treat with physical therapy?

We treat a variety of needs, including recovery after surgery, injuries, back and neck problems, shoulder, hip, and knee problems, balance difficulties, mobility limitations, and sports-related injuries. Your therapist will evaluate your condition to determine whether physical therapy is appropriate.
