You received a gift certificate or you decided to treat yourself to a relaxing and peaceful massage. However, you’re feeling a little tense through the whole massage because you’re not sure if or how much you should tip your therapist. Here is a simple guide to tipping your massage therapist.
To Tip or Not to Tip?
The first question is should I or should I not tip my massage therapist? Since you are receiving a personal service it is customary to tip your massage therapist.
Your Therapist Depends on Tips
It’s important to remember that the fee you pay for a massage is going to the company providing the service. The massage therapist does receive a share of the cost you pay for the massage. However, as is often the case, the therapist’s split of the revenue can be very small. As a result, the massage therapist is depending on tips to augment their income.
The gratuity also serves as an incentive for the provider to deliver the best possible service. It’s best to keep in mind that there will be a tip and include that in the total fee you are expecting to pay.
How Much Should you Tip for a Massage?
Now the big question arises how much do I tip my massage therapist. The standard rate for a massage tip is 20%. However, the actual amount of the tip may depend on your satisfaction with the service.
This works similarly to tipping the waitstaff in a restaurant. There are times when it is appropriate to tip less than the customary 20%. There are also times when we have such a great experience that we will tip substantially more. Tipping your massage therapist is no different.
How much should you tip if you are using a coupon to reduce the cost of your massage? In this case, it is appropriate to tip 20% of the full cost for the massage.
One variable to consider is the setting for your massage. A larger tip may be expected if you are receiving your massage in a high-end spa salon or resort.
How do I Leave the Tip
Some establishments leave an envelope in the room to be used to tip your therapist. If there is no envelope you may want to leave the tip on the table.
So, the next time you’re getting a massage you can be confident in knowing that a tip of 20% is the customary amount unless your service warrants a greater or lesser amount.
We hope this is helpful and you fully enjoy your next massage.
